Writer’s Workshop Implemented in All Classrooms
This school year, all City Academy students are participating in Writer’s Workshop. This is an industry standard that emphasizes the styles and ideas of writing. Writer’s Workshop was championed by teachers as a way to promote the importance of writing. Writer’s Workshop also helps students develop their reading skills.
Students spend their time in Writer’s Workshop writing, not with teachers instructing how to write. During Writer’s Workshop, teachers present a topic in a mini-lesson and scholars write about the subject. This approach lays the foundation in Early Childhood for a love of reading and writing. Young scholars also begin to see themselves as writers.
“Students love Writer’s Workshop,” says Principal Milton Mitchell. “Upper-grade scholars are learning various styles of writing. Early Childhood students are discovering how to be independent and finding their voices as writers.”
