We believe that every child should have access to high quality education, regardless of a family’s income or geographic location. All students at City Academy receive tuition support through generous donations from local foundations, corporations, and individual donors. Tuition is based on income and varies by family. Tuition includes before and after school programs, as well as our summer program. Breakfast, lunch, and snacks are also included with tuition.Share this:
As I sat on the edge of my seat, hanging on to each word of the beautifully-written and presented speeches of our graduating sixth graders, I was unexpectedly overcome by a wave of feelings and reflections. Just a year and a half before, I was being interviewing by these very students as candidate to be their principal. At the time, I couldn’t help but be captivated by their thoughtful questions, the seriousness in which they took their learning, their understanding of the world, and most notably, the way they interacted with each other and the adults who surrounded them. My time with them convinced me that City Academy was unlike any place I had ever explored.Share this:
Choosing City Academy for our two children is one of the best decisions we’ve made for their future. When you don’t attend a neighborhood school everyone asks, “Where do your kids go?” Craig and I find ourselves singing the praises of City Academy’s teachers, administrators and the overall vision to raise future community leaders.Share this:
April is Literacy Month at City Academy. We’re celebrating with our students, faculty, staff, and volunteers!
This week, several individual City Academy supporters and community partners, such as Bring Me A Book St. Louis, participated in story-time. These volunteers read books such as Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein in upper grade classrooms and Flight School by Lita Judge to early childhood students.
After the stories were read, scholars brought the books to life though novel engineering projects. Novel engineering allows our students to integrate literacy and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math).Share this:
Buddy Morning is a great opportunity for both community supporters and students. Twice a year, community partners, donors, supporters, and volunteers spend one-on-one time with a student and experience our unique mission.
City Academy has hosted twenty-one Buddy Morning events since 2006. Each attendee is paired with a scholar and has the opportunity to build a relationship through educational activities. Buddies participate in great activities including playing drums in music, building robots in science, and creating leaf rubbings in art.
Buddy Morning attendees are individual supporters and community partners of City Academy. Many attend because they are able to see first-hand the exceptional education and community transformation that is taking place at City Academy. In fact, many individuals attend so often that they are called Super Buddies. Super Buddies have attended at least five Buddy Mornings. Many are paired with the same student buddy each time, building a lasting friendship.Share this:
EDUCATION FOR ALL
Every child deserves hope, and black or white has nothing to do with it.
I had just graduated from my private liberal-arts college and was working for a large St. Louis corporation when a friend asked me to volunteer as a tutor at Mathews-Dickey Boys’ & Girls’ Club. That’s where I met Anthony, a second-grader attending school in an underperforming district that would later lose accreditation. His mom cared deeply for him, but the family had few educational options. She turned to Mathews-Dickey, a St. Louis nonprofit institution that has provided athletic, enrichment, and educational opportunities to children in north St. Louis for more than 50 years.
Anthony and I had very different backgrounds and lives, but we quickly found how much we had in common. For the next eight years, we met weekly. We talked about algebra and athletics, economics and comics, pie charts and pizza. I shared my love of books, and he shared his passion for art. I gave Anthony my perspective on the endless possibilities for his future, and Anthony helped steer mine.Share this:
“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” Martin Luther King, Jr.
This seminal quote delivered by Dr. King served as both a rallying cry and proverbial exclamation mark to conclude a stirring address made before the scholars and faculty of Spellman College in April 1960. As I recently re-read through the entirety of the message, I was immediately overcome with excitement and humility. I noticed how well our school’s mission and the subsequent fulfilling of our mission poetically align with his poignant thoughts on the critical role of education in remedying the societal ills and birthing hope for our country’s future.Share this:
