City Academy students are immersed in a culture of reading and writing in order for them to become life-long learners. Literacy is at the foundation of our curriculum, even as students enter junior kindergarten. As partners, parents and faculty work together to build this culture of literacy by modeling the behaviors of lifelong readers.

The entire City Academy community engages our students in the reading process: parents, teachers, administration, alumni and staff. Our reading program is an integral part of each student’s day. Reading instruction is differentiated to support the varying abilities and needs of our developing readers. This ensures that each individual student possesses an assortment of comprehension strategies that work for them.

Reading is the foundation of future learning. We challenge our students to be exceptional readers. This year, we implemented Accelerated Reader. This reading test program provides teachers with information about students’ comprehension and vocabulary on an ongoing basis.

While piloting the program last year, our fourth grade class allowed us to make immediate improvements in classroom instruction and identify students that were struggling. City Academy instructors identified the need to have additional classroom supports for individual student growth. We created a new position, Reading Intervention Specialist, to provide individualized support for students.

We are grateful for support from the Norman J. Stupp Foundation-Commerce Bank, Trustee and for Allen P. and Josephine B. Green Foundation. Through their support, we have been able to implement the Accelerated Reader program and purchase 325 new books for our library.

We’re celebrating reading throughout the entire month of April! Our students are showcasing their favorite books by tweeting to their favorite authors.
