The mathematics and science curriculums at City Academy are designed to produce logical thinkers capable of applying solid reasoning skills in all fields of study. Our goal is to teach students to think critically and apply those skills to new situations.
City Academy's mathematics curriculum seeks to build a foundation in basics that develops the ability to reason logically. By the sixth grade, students demonstrate mastery of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of fractions and decimals and demonstrate basic knowledge of algebra, statistics and probability.
The science program further supports the development of critical thinking skills. From third through sixth grade, students begin more formal study of the life, earth and physical sciences using the Discovery Works science program.
Both City Academy’s curriculum and facilities engage science-minded thinking. A butterfly garden, nature trail and pond provide an opportunity for observation and discussion.
A fully-equipped science laboratory allows for a hands-on learning experience where students can test, observe and come to their own conclusions. All classrooms tend outdoor gardens on campus that supply produce to the school food service. First- and sixth-grade students oversee an indoor grow lab and compost through a project supported by a local community organization.
All students participate in an annual City Academy science fair and the school holds family Math and Science nights. Classrooms take science and math related field trips throughout the year.
