The Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries
Awards City Academy $6,000
The Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries announced City Academy as one of 190 school libraries to receive a grant. The Foundation is awarding $1,097,104 in grants for 2008. City Academy is one of only two schools in the state of Missouri to receive a grant from the Foundation. City Academy received the maximum award of $6,000 to expand, update and diversify its library collection.
City Academy was co-founded in 1999 by Don Danforth III and Duncan Marshall, long-time volunteers at Mathews-Dickey Boys’ and Girls’ Club. The school offers grades junior kindergarten through sixth and has an enrollment of 125 students. City Academy’s two-story, 40,000 square-foot facility is located on approximately three acres in north St. Louis.
Since the school's inception, City Academy’s primary objective has been to provide the most academically rigorous programming to promising children in our local community who are least likely to have access to a high-quality independent school education. Over 70% of City Academy's families reside in poor performing or unaccredited districts.
In addition, City Academy is unique because of the school's emphasis on scholarship which assures the program is financially accessible to families least likely to afford an independent school education. All families pay something, but tuition income provides only 20% of City Academy’s annual operating budget. The remaining 80% is a combination of investment income from endowment and donations from individuals, corporations and foundations. Further information is available at www.cityacademyschool.org
