Language Arts

City Academy’s language arts program exposes students to quality literature through classroom experiences/lessons and a strong library program. In the classroom, teachers stress phonemic awareness, reading comprehension, listening, speaking, spelling, grammar and writing.

Beginning in Junior Kindergarten, students participate in the reading incentive program conducted by the librarian/reading specialist. Grade-specific projects stress and assess comprehension and progress as they reinforce reading and writing skills.

To reinforce writing skills, students in the Third through Sixth grades participate in a computer-based program that measures a child’s written performance in comparison to independent school norms and provides tutorials to guide students in strengthening skills specific to individual needs.

We also incorporate a parent education component for Junior Kindergarten, Senior Kindergarten, and First Grade students. Our librarian meets with parents to introduce and reinforce best reading practices that parents can use with their children at home.
