“Successful learning communities are the extended family of parents, teachers, administrators and school staff working together to support a child’s social, emotional and academic growth.” --Kelly Baker Tyson, M.A., Principal
Our Academic Philosophy City Academy's program is based on a child-centered philosophy. We believe in building self-esteem, creating enthusiasm for learning and sparking curiosity beginning at the earliest level.
We teach students the skills they will need to meet the challenges of future educational experiences. Faculty and families work together to support each child's unique development.
Assessment and Testing We evaluate students throughout the year. Student assessment is based primarily on the observations of teachers and parents, rather than a single test score. Formal standardized testing is conducted in the spring of each academic year. Developmental assessment of students' progress and achievement is used to identify children with special needs, communicate with parents and evaluate the program's effectiveness.
Guidance of Social and Emotional Development City Academy's curriculum provides children many opportunities to develop social skills including cooperation, negotiation and conflict resolution.
Teachers facilitate the development of self-control in children by using positive guidance techniques. Through modeling we encourage behavior that is appropriate and expected, redirecting children to a more acceptable activity and setting clear limits.
Parent-Teacher Relations Teachers work in partnership with parents. Regular communication fosters mutual understanding and provides consistency for the children. Each family is required to contribute a minimum of 20 hours of volunteer time to the school every year.
